Update from Hiroshi Watanabe -- New exhibitions
& new publications for 2011 December
7, 2010--March 13, 2011, San Jose Museum of
ArtLast year, I received a commission project
from the San Jose Museum of Art. The project was to photograph
the city's Japantown. I was told I had the freedom to
photograph any subject as long as they relate to Japantown of
San Jose. 19 prints from the commissioned work were purchased
by the museum and 9 are on view as a part of the current
exhibition, DEGREES
OF SEPARATION: CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE PERMANENT
COLLECTION.There will be a private
reception at the musuem on January 4, 2011
One Picture Book “Love Point”
from Nazraeli Press will
be available shortly. Limited edition of 500 with
signed silver gelatin print.
A few prints from the series will be exhibited
at Nazraeli Press booth in Photo LA from January
13 th to 16 th at Santa Monica Civic
Auditorium, 1855 Main Street, Santa Monica,

Venice in
Peril Venice in Peril finances
restoration and research into the underlying problem of Venice
and lobby for the long-term defense of the city both as a
monument and a living community. Since it was created after
the great flood of 1966, the Venice in Peril Fund has
disbursed millions of pounds for the restoration of Venetian
monuments, buildings and works of art. The Fund is also
committed to ensuring the sustainability of Venice, acting as
a lobby group and working to find answers to some of the
critical ecological, demographic and socio-economic issues

was commissioned to photograph Venice and I traveled there in
October. The other photographers commissioned were Olivo
Barbieri, Lynne Cohen, Dionisio Gonzalez, Candida Hofer, Tiina
Itkonene, Mimmo Jodice, Anders Peterson, Jules Sinatsch,
Robert Walker, Pierre Gonnord, and Philip-Lorca
diCorcia.

The exhibition as a part of the official
programme of the Venice Biennale 2011 (starts in June, 2011)
will take place on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, in the
"Officina dell'Arte Spirituale" room, located in the Monastery
of San Giorgio Magiore Abbazzia throughout the Biennale.The
works will then moved to London where they will be exhibited
and auctioned by Simon de Pury for the benefit of
Venice. I hope to see you
